One operator, across every angle of the business.

Chris Aitken, business development consultant

I’m Chris Aitken, a business development consultant working between London and Northamptonshire, with an unusually wide span: strategy, software, architecture, sales, intellectual property, web, marketing, integration and the commercial and legal groundwork underneath. It’s a broad remit, and I’ve earned every part of it by doing the work.

I founded and run The CPD Register, an independent UK certification body, and built CPD Passport, a live software platform, from the first line of the specification. Along the way I secured a UK certification mark, hold a granted UK patent for online-invigilation technology, and have drafted, negotiated and defended the commercial terms a growing business lives or dies by. I’m a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

That combination is the point. I’ve had to be the strategist, the developer, the architect, the salesperson, the IP holder and the negotiator (often on the same day), which is why I can move between those roles for clients without the usual hand-offs and gaps.

Outside the day job I build things in the real world too: I help run a free community music festival and sit on my town council’s events committee. Same instinct: take an idea, sort out the money, the logistics and the people, and make it happen.

How I work

  • Built, not theorised Everything I advise on, I’ve done for real: founded the company, filed the patent, shipped the platform, signed the contracts.
  • One point of contact One operator who sees how strategy, technology, IP and commercials connect, instead of three specialists who never speak.
  • Commercial first Judged against revenue, risk and momentum, never activity for its own sake.

Tell me what you’re trying to build.
